Akpembe's Goalless Streak in CSL: The Longest in Recent History
Updated:2025-11-07 13:52 Views:79The Kano State Football Association (KSAFA) has announced the end of their long-standing goalless streak in the Nigerian Professional League (NPL), which began in 2011.
The league, which was founded in 2014, is one of the most successful football leagues in Nigeria and has been crowned several times as the best league in Africa.
However, this season, the league had not played a single game since October 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The league's president, Mr. Abdullahi Akpembe, said that the club's management had taken steps to address the situation and ensure the return of games for the next season.
"We have worked closely with the league's governing body and the relevant authorities to ensure that we can start playing again," he added.
Akpembe explained that the league had implemented strict measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including the use of masks and social distancing.
"The league also implemented a plan to provide financial support to clubs affected by the pandemic, which included payment of salaries, bonuses and other benefits," he said.
The KSAFA has been working on implementing new rules and regulations to ensure that the league can resume its operations safely.
"We will continue to work closely with the league's governing body and other stakeholders to ensure that the league can resume play at a safe and controlled level," he concluded.
The KSAFA's decision to end the goalless streak comes after years of trying to find solutions to improve the league's performance.
The league has struggled with low attendance and poor results, despite promising performances from some of its teams. This has led to a lack of interest from fans and sponsors, causing the league to struggle financially.
The long goalless streak was one of the reasons why the league could not compete with other leagues in terms of popularity and revenue.
However, the league's president, Mr. Akpembe, believes that the situation can be addressed through a combination of changes to the league's rules and regulations, as well as improving the quality of matches being played.
He expressed hope that the league can once again attract more fans and sponsors, and that it can regain its former glory.
